Nesting
Q. I cannot sleep at night and I am cleaning like crazy. Please help me to determine what's going on.
-LaDonna, Texas
A. Sometimes sleeplessness during late pregnancy is caused by discomfort or a racing mind. In either case, it is supposedly nature's way of preparing you for getting up with the baby in the middle of the night. That's when the real sleep deprivation begins!
As far as your cleaning is concerned, most women go through a frenzied cleaning and organizing spree "nesting" just a few days before the baby is born.
My friend Tammy was on her hands and knees for eight hours straight, cleaning the greasy dirt that had accumulated under the baseboards of the deli she and her husband owned. Every time a customer entered the shop, her husband got the third degree about having her do such hard physical labor in her maternal condition. He tried to explain the she insisted on doing the job because it had to be done her way and had to be done "right." The next day, she delivered her son Andrew.
It sounds as if you are experiencing some signs of pre-pre-labor. Be on the lookout for the signs of pre-labor such as: loss of the "mucous plug," the baby dropping, the "bloody show," diarrhea, contractions or water breaking.
